A love letter to a bride

Posted by on in Blog, Bridal, Words | 5 comments

You’re getting married to someone you want to spend the rest of your life with, and seeing you so happy makes me happy too.  I know you’ll make a success of your marriage together, as you share so much and yet still allow each other space to be yourselves. Your roots are entwined and whatever the future may hold, you will have each other.  It is clear that you bring out the best in each other, and want the best for one another.  On your wedding day I want you to start as you mean to go on, with love, respect, joy and with a sense of shared adventure.

When you enter the room to say those important and powerful words, I want everyone to look at you and see the beautiful happy woman that you are. The person you are about to marry should see the woman of their dreams,  the woman they intend to spend the rest of their life with, not a production-line ill-fitted bride in something that screams ‘look, but don’t touch’. Looking and feeling beautiful means that you are the focus of attention, rather than how much you are fidgeting or what you are wearing (although a few choice compliments are always good!) and you can relax and enjoy yourself.

If you don’t feel good in your dress you will always remember that  and whenever you see a photograph of yourself, you’ll be reminded of how you felt. Your memories should be of looking into your true love’s eyes as you say your vows, enjoying the good wishes from your friends and family, laughing, dancing and maybe even the tears that kept creeping into your eyes even though your heart was light with joy.

I want you to feel confident about how you look so that you’ll relax with your photographer (or rather I should say photographers, as everyone with a camera will be keen to take mementoes of the day) and being relaxed in front of a camera makes for much better pictures, ones that you’ll love. Photos that people will want to print, frame and display with pride. Photos that will capture all the joy and excitement of a special day.

I want you to feel good in a physical as well as mental way. A good quality silk lining means that your dress will feel smooth and soft against your skin, while beautiful tactile outer fabrics will positively encourage your beloved to reach out and hold you. You can choose to have your dress hold and support your body, or to merely skim and cover it allowing you to move however you wish. Your individual proportions should be fitted, flattered, shown off. Don’t apologise for the way nature made you, you are beautiful and you are loved, and if you must disguise the bits you don’t want to show, let’s do it in style.

You can follow, break or create new rules in style, whatever makes you feel amazing. You can have metres and metres of train or have a neat little pencil skirt. Or both. It’s about how you want to look and move on a day that will be a day to remember for so many people you care about, whether they are there to witness it or not. It’s about being a part of your families’ traditions and making new ones as you create a new future for yourself. It is so much emotion and hope and love and nerves and confidence and expectation and the faraway future and the ancient past all in one dress. It may be that you’ll only wear it on one day, (although it doesn’t have to be that way) and yet it’ll be a part of your life, an integral part of the story of you.

with all my love and best wishes,

Faith x
