Can you keep a secret?

Can you keep a secret?

I regularly get asked by clients and colleagues ‘can you keep a secret?’  In fact, I spend a lot of time being asked to keep secrets.  Sometimes pretty big secrets, and sometimes relatively small, but all worth keeping nonetheless. It turns out being trustworthy comes up pretty high on the list of required job skills for a good designer or dressmaker and I treat my clients in the same way I do my friends: if you ask me to keep things secret, I do it. For women who regularly seek their friends’ and partner’s opinions on what to wear on even the smallest occasion,...

Designing you a beautiful, magical reality

Designing you a beautiful, magical reality

There are a lot of beautiful and yet strangely elongated fashion drawings out there, and many, many sketches of amazing outfits that would never work in the real world on a real person.  When it comes to drawing and designing wedding dresses, evening gowns, or even stage costumes, in my opinion it is above all about people.  I have never been someone who designs crazy or unwearable clothes or costumes, my aim has always been a fantasy for human proportions. I would never want to design something that looks better on a hanger than on an actual human being, as what would be the point? Even in...

Making time, enjoying opportunity

I have just emerged from a particularly intense and  busy few weeks  and now I’m feeling a little dazed and confused, with a list as long as my arm of things I need to get on with (I have very long arms). I emerge from a period of intensity with a long list of things that have slipped by the wayside as well as all those things, both business and pleasure, that I planned to do when more time became available. At this rate I may never have much spare time, but it’s not all bad when you enjoy the work you do. My time lately has been jam packed with designing, wedding fairs, business...

Inspiration Strikes

It’s not always that I can be creative when I want, however much I may think and strive, the ideas just don’t come or they’re not quite what I’m looking for. Sometimes, however, ideas just come to me out of the blue or at moments when I least expect them. Today I had one of those exciting thunderbolt moments and I had to act immediately or miss more than just enjoying drawing and exploring possibilities. This is because today’s post is more than a chance to share an unexpected idea I had, it is also my entry to win a place at the twice sold out Blogcademy...

Shining bright for all to see

I have been thinking about all the amazing women athletes who have been competing in the Olympic and Paralympic games in London this summer. How can I not be? For the first time ever there were women representing every competing country in the Olympics, Lizzie Armistead was the first Briton to win a medal for Team GB and more British Olympic gold medals have been won by women than ever before. The first British gold medal of the Paralympics was won by Sarah Storey and women of all nations are showing that they equal (and often exceed) the achievements of the men. There were countless...

Striving for perfection

Posted by on in Thoughts, Words | 2 comments

I’m trying to hard to write beautiful words that people will want to read and because I spend so long striving for perfection I am frustrated when I don’t achieve it. I’m working away and yet not sharing the results because the perfect turn of phrase eludes me or my grammar is less than I would like; the shadows in the photograph aren’t as aesthetically pleasing as I’d hoped or the illustration has a smudge. My notebook is full of unpublished blog articles and sketches that no one but me has seen and I don’t share them because I’m afraid. Of what...
